Shropshire Day 4

Shropshire Day 4

Today we went from ancient warfare to the Battle of Britain. We were at Stokesay Castle near the little town of Craven Arms. To be fair it was never really intended for conflict but was built in the 1280s by Laurence of Ludlow a rich wool merchant as a fortified manor house. Run by English Heritage it offers wonderful views from its tower along a typical wooded valley of the Shropshire Hills that swoop into mid Wales.

We found the pictured Mk 1 Spitfire at the RAF Museum at Cosford, one of Shropshire’s more modern gems. There are many aircraft on display from the early days of military flight right through the technological warplanes that were developed through our lifetimes.

We will bring you the full story and lots of pictures in January’s issue.
