Clive's Countryside Blog: May 8th

I was out cutting the grass and came across this mum pheasant taking a stroll with her kids. I rapidly put the mower in reverse and shut it down so that I did’t worry her (I was looking for an excuse to stop anyway). Mowing over for the day, I popped back for my camera and binoculars. So beautiful, so amazing. I tried to count the chicks but from a distance, it wasn’t easy. I think that there are probably fifteen. It just melts your heart. This is nature at it’s best. I know that the odds of them all surviving are pretty low but I can’t think of that, I am just thrilled to have seen the pheasant family sharing my garden. I’ll put out food for them to try and make mum’s job a bit easier. They’ve made my day.

In 2006 Choice travel photographer Clive Nicholls moved from a home in the city to a small village in the heart of the countryside. Thirteen years on and he’s still learning the country ways and every day brings a few surprises.
