Editors Letter: Summer days and cricket

I hope I haven't spoken too soon but we seem to have had some lovely weather this year. Let's hope it continues through the rest of the summer with a little gentle rain during the early hours to freshen things up.

Speaking of rain, I was planning a day at the cricket complete with my birthday present, a man's cool bad containing my lunch. the night before, to my indignation, my wife said how she hoped it would rain the next day so that her gardening would be easier at the weekend.

Thanks for that. I imagined myself huddled under an umbrella waiting for the umpire's pitch inspection with only the contents of my cool bag to cheer me up Oh yes, a man's cool bag? It's a grey/green colour with a shoulder strap and meant really to carry two bottles of wine.

Luckily it was a beautiful afternoon and Leicestershire won. The only downside was having to traipse around the garden with heavy watering cans to compensate for several dry days.

Last summer my cricket expeditions were all damp. This year, so far not a drop, just the occasional cold wind.

Cricket is a great way to relax for me. I can sit in the sun, find a shady spot or stroll around the ground to work on my 10,000 steps- a Fitbit was another birthday present.

Play doesn't have to be exciting all the time. That's part of the subtlety of the game, you can think or doze.

Mrs Wright is even coming to one of the evening games. I bet she doesn't wish for rain then.
