Christmas come too early? Definitely.

At the risk of being cast as Scrooge I have to register my protest at Christmas being brought forward to last most of the Autumn.

It is the same for all our seasonal celebrations. the commercialisation goes on for so long that the actual day itself risks being an anti-climax.

Halloween went on for a couple of months and as soon as Bonfire Night was over the big stores' Christmas TV ads started up. And talking of Guy Fawkes, as usual the fireworks started way ahead of the fifth and were still exploding days afterwards, much to the terror of thousands of pets all over the country.

Picking up my customary Costa coffee on the way to the office in early November I was horrified to get a cup with a giant picture of Santa Claus. Too early, far too early.

Then there are hot cross buns. I love them- rather too much. But now they are on sale all year. We bought some the other day, but only because they were available.

Ted the village baker when I was a boy made his fantastic hot cross buns just for Good Friday. That made them a proper treat and something you would really savour because it would be a year before you would get another bite of those golden brown, sugar glazed, fruit laden wonder. I can taste them now.

Ted's bread oven was in the heart of the little shop and picking up your order on Good Friday often meant witnessing the next batch of buns coming out on huge baking trays. That spicy aroma was Easter for me.

Do you agree with Norman? Or do you think he's being a bit of a Scrooge?
